About Me

Hello, welcome

If you have found your way here, it’s likely you, too, understand that life rarely unfolds as nearly as we plan.

Motherhood changes you. It strips you down, rebuilds you, and shows you parts of yourself you never knew existed. But what happens when, in the middle of that transformation, you feel lost? Isolated? Invisible?

I know what that feels like because I have lived it. I know the weight of expectations, the silent pressure to hold everything together, to be grateful, to be “fine” when inside, you are anything but. I also know what it’s like to feel like support isn’t meant for people like you. That the systems in place weren’t built with your experience in mind.

That’s why I created The Unlikely Mummy. Because no mother should have to suffer in silence. Because we all deserve a space to be seen, heard, and supported. Not just as parents, but as people.

Turning pain into purpose

My journey didn’t start in mental health, it started with sport. I understood the power of movement, resilience, and community. But when I became a mother, I found myself in a different kind of battle. One where mental health was often dismissed, where cultural stigma made it even harder to speak up, and where so many mothers felt abandoned in their most vulnerable moments.

I saw the gaps. The lack of real, accessible, culturally inclusive support. And I knew I had to do something about it.

I didn’t just want to share my story; I wanted to change the story for others.

Through The Unlikely Mummy, I have built a space where mental health isn’t just an afterthought. Where conversations about anxiety, social isolation, and cultural barriers aren’t whispered about behind closed doors. Where support is real, practical, and shaped by the voices of those who have lived it.

I am Kavita Trevena, the founder of The Unlikely Mummy, an award-winning nonprofit community dedicated to support mothers not to feels alone. My work is built on lived experience of motherhood, mental health challenges, and the reality that too many parents struggle in silence. Through advocacy and peer support, I am committed to making sure that every mother has access to the support, community, and understanding they deserve.

My journey into mental health advocacy wasn’t planned; it was shaped by the realities I faced. As a mother, I encountered the overwhelming challenges of perinatal mental health, social anxiety, and the cultural expectations that often prevent people from seeking help. I knew that mental health support had to be more than just an afterthought, it had to be accessible, inclusive, and truly reflective of those who need it.

With a background in sports, I have always understood the power of movement in mental well-being. I have combined this with my passion for parenting and mental health to create The Unlikely Mummy, a space where mothers, parents, and families can find the support they need without fear of judgment.

Turning pain into purpose

What started as a blog has grown into a movement. The Unlikely Mummy provides vital support through:

  • Walk and Talk Therapy – A unique approach that integrates movement with open conversations, breaking down barriers to accessing mental health support.
  • Peer mentoring and support groups – A safe and inclusive space where lived experience is valued, and no one has to struggle alone.
  • Pre & Postnatal exercise and retreats – Supporting physical and mental well-being through expert-led sessions, including forest retreats for connection and reflection.
  • Workshops and training – Culturally competent sessions on perinatal mental health, social anxiety, and breaking down barriers to care.
  • Family support events – Engaging activities that bring parents and families together, creating a sense of community and shared experience.
  • Advocacy and campaigns – Driving change for perinatal mental health and showing that it is a priority for everyone.

Our mission is clear: every mother should feel safe, supported, and never alone.

A voice for change

Beyond direct support, I have been at the forefront of key national conversations about perinatal mental health, for me it is important that lived experience is not just heard but acted upon.

Some of my work includes:

  • Being apart of the NCT 6-8 Week Check Campaign – Advocating for all mothers to receive a dedicated postnatal check for their mental and physical health. This campaign has pushed for real change in how postpartum care is delivered.
  • Speaking on LBC News – Raising awareness about maternal mental health and the impact of social media, breaking down stigma and encouraging open conversations.
  • Consulting across Mental Health projects – Advising organisations on how to embed inclusive, practical mental health support into their services and policies. As well as Working as a lived experience expert to shape policies and services that genuinely reflect the needs of parents and families.

Through these initiatives, I continue to challenge outdated systems, push for better support, and support perinatal mental health is treated as a priority.

Not just a community

The Unlikely Mummy doesn’t just offer services, we are building a community. A space where support is real, conversations matter, and every mother knows: you are not alone.

We believe that mental health support should be proactive, accessible, and shaped by the people who need it most. Whether through our retreats, exercise sessions, peer support, or national advocacy, our work is about creating long-term, meaningful change.
